Phantoms vs Fire - WLDFE

Phantom VS Fire hails from Brazil, and it out with its second album which has been released on cassette and CD via German-based label Blackjack Illuminist Records. Purely electronic-act which makes a lovely fusion between chilled retro-wave and dreamish ambient electro-pop. Think Boards of Canada, Electric Youth, and touches of Daft Punk here and there.

It´s a bloody well-executed piece of work I say. Kind of thing that retro-wave fans might enjoy since the album/act tries something new with the nostalgic synth-formula. An excellent example of this would be to give the second track Mirage a listen (or two for that matter). The first thing you´ll notice would be the strange nostalgic (and slightly sound-altered) beat starting the track, a kind of beat which takes me back to the late 80s to early 90s. Rap-groups and other pop acts have used this similar beat. This beat gets joined up with a lovely warped heavy synth-bass and a futuristic and dreamish melody straight from heaven. The mood gets slightly more dark and dramatic later on with angelic church-like organs! One of those lovely kinds of tracks which just kind of... grows on you. I have heard this track... maybe 20 times so far?. Third track A Beautiful Madness lives up to its title. Reminds me of something apocalyptic from one of those old Japanese RPG-typed games which you played on your NES or the Sega Masterdrive. (Phantasy Star, Final Fantasy etc).

A kind of storytelling quality if you please. Retro-wave with gothic/dark-wave elements are explored on the fifth track Electric Cross, has that almost early Italian zombie-flick drama attached to it! The best elements we have heard from French Daft Punk are further exposed to us on the sixth track Cave Dreams, sounds like a lovely dream that shouldn't end.

And that is that rest of the tracks/album are also worth the exploring. As mentioned earlier, the album shines of storytelling like quality which makes the album hold from the start to the very end. If you put on Tangerine Dream´s Stratosfear, then you know that u should listen to that entire album to the end of it. Same way works with this! A lovely underground indietronica release which deserves attention.

Compactor - Total Data Control

Have not heard much about this project, which actually has been active since 2011. 100% pure minimalist brutality of a solo project! And Total Data Control is the very latest. Also being out on cassette via Phage Tapes (see link below).

You got 8 tracks of pure digital sound brutality. Every micro-second made of pure ear-candy delight. Somewhere between the electronic armchair feel of Autechre to the industrial rhythmic abstraction of Synapscape. The sound volume goes up and down in a split second, distorted-sounds jumps from the left speaker and right back to the right speaker, almost feeling a physical presence of an organic rhythmic beast in the heart of this. I can even taste the sounds on the edge of my tongue, tastes like something between corroded and rusted wires and welded steel!

First track Pervasive Intrusion starts the track with a lovely back-to-basics industrial/power-noise beat, looped steel bar tunes, fingertipped-controlled pedal-distortion effects (almost sounds like a mechanical guitar!). All of this gets warped in and out of focus, hint of Aphex Twin madness here and there. Really brutal and abstract at the same time.

Second track Location / Identification offers 8-bit Commodore 64 sounds being totally exploited and mutilated in a lovely rhythmic soundscape. The sounds of steel-spiders crawling all over this track. More of a creepy paranoia piece, very enjoyable!

Fourth track lets the listener understand the creepiness behind a Security Camara Stream. A more of an experimental and non-rhythmic noise piece. Again, we are dealing with a sound-brutality that u just want to dive into. Very stimulating material, almost feeling my brain is starting to itch (in a good way!).

Another track that should be mentioned is the last track on the album, called Listen Learn Predict. A heart-rhythmic death-industrial machine pounding slowly, telegram bleeps, old-school modem noises, screaming digital-ghosts... I mean really, this is good!

There is (or can be) a ghost inside a machine after all. And Compactor has just proven that. A frightening cold and merciless old-school mechanical machine with human faults and feelings?. The cold technoid aesthetics has a lot of souls ok?!. You have got to give this one a good listen, this is great! Additional (and official) info below :

Total Data Control is a 40-minute audio document recently licensed on US underground label Phage Tapes. The collection turns the lens and microphone around on Surveillance Capitalism, the commodification of consumer information. The cover art was created from the actual code for an open platform video surveillance program. Each of the eight tracks points to a different aspect of how ubiquitous these practices have become in society, especially since the increasing shift towards everything being done online. Further sentence fragments inside the insert trace the steps of a path of commands that leads to increased compromises in the humanity of our societal structures. There is also a simplified GPS map to one of the sources of this.

Human Vault - Primordial

Think this is the... 4th time I am listening to this. Received it via post 4 days ago. An older project (1999) which is one of the numerous side-projects of Gyorgy Turoczy (Stone Wired, Odour Sonour). This album is the latest Human Vault album. I will suggest for you readers (who are curious) about older releases, check the Discogs link below. And yes, this project has a lot of releases to check up on!

Most of the work done by Gyorgy has been in the vein of death-industrial/dark-ambient, where Human Vault moves towards a more EBM-inspired sound. An almost old-school/retro sound not that far away from early Skinny Puppy, FLA, and Delirium. A kind of slow and murky EBM with a kind of ambient-soundtrack on top of it. And this album offers about 50 minutes of that EBM-ambient industrial fusion-delight!

The first track offers that Initial Command (FLA) murky creepiness of sound with fantastic evocative distorted vocals. Really love the cold and clinical rhythms here, and the (almost) X-files´ish melodic soundtrack synth. Epic without the unnecessary drama, love it!.

Second track convinces you thoroughly about the intention of the album. A strange and warped rhythmic electronica industrial-doom instrumental treat, the snare-drum on this ... a pure experimental ear-candy track here! Again with incredible icy synths on top. Fans of Doubting Thomas, take notice!

The third track has the samples once used by My Life With A Thrill Kill Kult ´And this is what the devil does´. The only difference is that this track doesn't take you out on the disco-EBM dancefloor. A kind of apocalyptic-heresies-on-the-burning-stake In Slaughter Natives kind of feel here! Pounding and thick metallic ritualistic rhythms just getting more and more intense as the track continues. Something about this track makes me think of Carpenter´s ´Prince of Darkness´movie, damn sure it could fit perfectly into that old soundtrack!

More to discover on this album, and every track on the album is worth the exploring. But my favorite track on this album must be ever seductive So I Just Fly Away (8th track). Almost reaching angelic ambiance here, with perfectly executed and down-tempo steel-like electronica drums. And with those dark and slightly futuristic retro synths (X-files?). A really beautiful track here!.

This excellent release has been released on a beautiful cassette, while also being digital available on the official Bandcamp site. Cassette-box being enclosed in a black (and thick) illustrated cardboard (LOVE THAT!). 66 physical copies, act fast!.

Världsbrand - Mene Tekel

This project started way back in 1998 with a single recording + cassette-release, which has since been lost and forgotten. Now after digesting new inspirations, this old project has been revived. So far (this year) there have been 3 releases; one album, one EP and one demo release. The demo plus this album called Mene Tekel are available via the projects official Bandcamp site, while the mini-album being available via So Fuckin´ Noise Records Bandcamp site (see links below). 5 tracks about 35 minutes in total.

First albums set the listener into a cruel, harsh cold and abandoned landscape of sound. Not brutal and overlayered, but a strict concentrated clinical sound-cut into the heart. A Sharp and metallic rotor-bladelike sound, being very expressive and minimal to the core. Mystical rumblings far away in the recording can also be heard, with occasional chilly TG´ish synth-keys also. Not that far away from the more ritualistic workings by Anenzephalia and Ke/Hil. Very good, I like this VERY much so far.

Next track Spräng Dig Genom Rummet dives further into murky industrial ritualistic-aesthetics. Fans of early Maschinenzimmer 412, take notice. Machine-room monotonic organic rhythms, minimal distorted looped bass-sounds wit rhythmic clicks and hisses here and there... I LOVE IT!.

The third piece called Avslutade Kapitel being a very spacy experience. Deep space maybe?. Feels like being on a rollercoaster to some far out dimension where the great outer god Yog-Sothoth sits and waits? A very strange mind-wobbling track indeed.

The fourth track simply called Anti, starts where the former track ended. Instead of ending in another cosmic dimension, you end up on a completely empty world. No plants, no organic life... just nothing. Not even a distant sun, moon or stars to look it. Nothing. Only one thing is present, distant weird howls from somewhere beyond the horizon. Question is, is that sound coming from your own head? Do find out! and tell me about it.

Last track moves into shamanistic territories. Evocative tribal drums, ritualistic and heavy-sounding blowing-instrument´ish drones. A very mysterious and esoteric ending for a great album!

It is an album which many will-not-get at the first listen, I did though (why?) I am not 100% sure. I think it is because I recognize this kind of music, recognize the wipe and the feel of it as well. A rare experience because it is not every day that I hear someone who can actually pull it off. And yes, Världsbrand did pull it off!.

Horologium - Atavistic Americana

Last year last X-mas I had a dream! Something about receiving a great industrial record... which I didn´t get. I ended up with socks and whiskey. Well... the socks were in über-mensch quality, and who can say no to a whiskey??! Nevertheless, IF I did receive a great (and new) industrial record I could have ended up with this. The latest release from Poland-based Horologium. And this album is their number 12! Been in existence since 2005.

So yes. Slovakia... Laibach? Borghesia?... And more Laibach!. Ahh well, this act actually has more in common with British Test Dept and U.S Ministry (80s era). A brutal anti-Trump album that pierces the skin of your ears. A fusion between the neo-classical avant-garde, post-punk infused electronica, and old-school sample-frenzied industrialism. 7 tracks 32 minutes long, available by digital means and as a BEAUTIFUL vinyl as well!

First track welcomes the listener with the American national anthem. Sets the theme RIGHT, in the same (but still unique) fashion with Test Dept´s album the Unacceptable Face of Freedom. Weird classical cut-up samples, martial (early) Laibach´ish trumpets and drummings, militaristic salsa rhythms (sounds great!) with more cut-up samples churning mindless from a nearby television set.

Second track gets it down and dirty with excellent post-punk rhythms (Wardance with Killing Joke?). An I-feel-like-dancing piece with more of the avant-garde classism on top of the awesome drums. Eeerie strings add an extra layer of ambient creepiness to it. Interesting piece, kind of stuff that pioneers of industrial music would create back in the day.

The third offering has a minor resemblance to early Der Blutharsch. Dramatic violins, mystic and erratic human voices, deep ritualistic horns... efficient.

The fourth piece takes us back to the atom-bomb, to just remind us how the atom-bomb (and still) is the new god of a modern age. Like Leather Nun told us with Prime-mover! A more ambient and soundtrack-based piece with. Relaxing but... scary at the same time. The threat of the atom-bomb... it will stay with us for a very long time!. And this track nails it.

The fifth track is a sad piece. Samples of weeping women on it and funeral-like martial drummings... Nope, it doesn't sound like a bad cliche. There is also another sample going on with Trump saying ´And yes, we are willing to get along with other nations´. He is saying that at the moment when threating ritualistic tensions are rising. A certain element of that classic CMI-sound is at work here (smiles).

The Sixth track gets back to the classic martial rock drums and trumpets, not that far away from Laibach´s Die Liebe. Just more subtle orthodox and church-like elements to it. Sounds like a soundtrack for a modern Jesus being nailed to the American cross!.

Last track takes us up to the moon. Who was the first?!. The Russians or the Americans?!. This track (sadly?) proves it was the Americans. Or was it?!. Was it set-up with actors?. Was Russia the first on the moon ( or someone else? ). A highly mysterious ambiance piece... imagining Biosphere doing a remix for Laibach?. I love it.

And that is that. The LP/vinyl is a thing of sheer beauty, and the album is a bloody masterpiece that tells you a tale about the time when industrial music was hip to the punk-bone. Go and have a listen! I am also planning to do an interview with these lads, stay tuned!.

Gryre  Demo I

A short demo was created and recorded live under heavy influence on the 29th of June 2018. This recording was then released on Ancient Meadow on the 3rd of February 2019.

A short thing of an EP, 5 tracks about 20 minutes in total. With all the tracks having untitled names. The digital Bandcamp releases clearly show something from the Spanish Inquisition (I think), witchfinder generals loyal henchmen doing their best to torture heretics and witches. The lovely cassette releases show something quite else. The grim reaper stands big and tall in a forest, has a tentacled snake-like skeleton protruding from one his arms. The head of the snake-like arm aims to devour what clearly illustrates... a skull-like moon? What does that mean?... Who cares?! It looks great and it goes VERY well with the music.

And yes we are dealing with some kind of dungeon synth, lots of mood and lots of grim scariness. Not the kind of merry fantasy D&D thing, but more with a kind of moody autumn landscape folk-lore kind of a thing. It's quite mystical, evocative with minor hints of a martial epicness here and there. Even the excellent first track contains fantastic esoteric-sounding Persian-like string. The second and third track offering spine-tingling and haunting melodies with beautiful simplicity (Not that far away from Finnish minimalist DS-act Silent Cabin). The fourth track on the demo would be my very favourite on the release. That certain feeling when something is on your trail in a blackened and frosty forest, maybe the inquisition? The excellent electronic martial drums certainly envoke that! The dramatic almost gothic-like melodies are AMAZING here! Really a powerful track!. Last and fifth track on the demo works a bit around that classic and early Mortiis sound, majestic epicness among ancient ruins on a foggy hill kind of a sound. A lovely track without a doubt, very evocative like the rest of the demo.

Pretty much I could write about a 20-minute demo from Minsk. An excellent and recommend one I might add. Your next order from Ancient Meadow, be sure to include this cassette!. One of the releases which clearly illustrates the quality which the label Ancient Meadow represents! You might wanna get/buy the tape via the labels official site since I cannot locate it on Ancient Meadow´s Bandcamp site.

Cool World

written by Eli Catastrofica

Ralph Bakshi´s final work and, undoubtedly, his worst. Cool World is a mess, from start to end. A guilty pleasure but a mess.

The story revolves around Jack Deebs, a cartoonist who created Cool World and that after spending 10 years in prison, gets "called" by a very horny Holli Would who, for some reason, wants desperately to be human. For that, she has to have sex with a human and that´s where Jack gets in. She actually does it and makes a crossover to the real world when everything gets boring as hell.
That´s the story.

Where to start... The dialogues are awful, the story is inconsistent and pointless and the acting is tedious. I read somewhere that Bakshi wanted to do a horror animated film, the concept of the film involved a cartoon and live action human having sex and conceiving a hybrid child who visits the real world to murder the father who abandoned her. However, Frank Mancuso changed the script behind Bakshi´s back and the result is this mess we have.

It´s not all bad though. The animation is awesome and the soundtrack kicks ass. Unfortunately, it´s the movie only redeeming qualities. The movie goes nowhere, we never get to know why Holli wanted to be human so much (besides wanting to have a gang bang, that scene at the restaurant is weird...) and you end the movie deciding if Kim Basinger was more annoying as a cartoon or as a human, even though the final scenes are hilarious. Gabriel Byrne as a silly superhero? Cool.

I only wish Ralph Bakshi decides, one day, to produce and/or direct the original idea for this movie. Cool World could be so much more than what it is...

Shelter Ov Shadows - The Serpent and the Circle of Perpetual Choirs

Something really dark and mysterious has evoked in the cold landscapes of Canada Gatineau, Québec. Since 2017 this project has been churning out 6 cassettes so far, and this one which I am going to review (with the very esoteric themed title) is the debut for this isolated project. This is one of the many acts by J. Browne who also was reviewed last year on Kalteldur with his project Widersinnen. Whereas Widersinnen moved into more winter-synth aesthetics, this project leans more into esoteric drones and ritualistic ambience.

We are dealing with a single-sided cassette containing only one track that goes by the same name as the release itself,  29 minutes and 26 seconds long in total.

Something subterranean, high to the ceilings and with deep, cold and mysterious tunnels (which might lead to places only read about in Jules Verne´s Journey to the Center of the Earth). That exact feeling engulfs the listener the very first second you have pressed the play button. And by the looks of it, you are probably not going to escape these vast caverns. It is not all devoid of life, hints of melodic synth work hide behind raw ambient drone-textures, which gives the listener (maybe) an idea of locating crumpling ruins within these subterranean spaces.

Excellent deep and heavy multilayered nonhuman-like voice drones are also present, which gives the overall recording a "nice" and "firm" bass-foundation. Everything on this recording sounds like a stream of pure and raw ambience streaming from an empty void, a void with no end that is!

A fantastic dark-ambient treat for everyone who is into primitive and raw soundtrack moods. Not polished with too much fluffiness, it just feels like a heavy carpet wearing you down to the very ground. You are bound to succumb to it, so you might as well just give in. Highly recommended for anyone who needs a slice of Canadian isolation! Out on cassette on french black-metal and ambient label Wulfrune Worxxx.

Kadaver - Ain´t Love Grand?

Another review from our favorite Israel-based death/noise-industrial act, this one came out on CD in 2018 via L.White Records (Limited to 100 copies). A cool looking DVD-cased thing with a blackened forest on. And with the title ´Ain´t Love Grand?´ ?...

I don´t know, is it?. Strongest emotion in mankind, one that destroys us and one that heals us in the everlasting circle of life. But I think that the kind of love which Kadaver will like to tell you a tale of would probably be the kind of love which destroys you... sort of.

With such titles like A Gas Chamber With a View, Mouthwash, Answering the Dead and Death Opens No Doors we should be aware things might not be so grand anyway? Anyways.

This album is still locked into the noisier-era/sound of Brighter Death Now (Interwar-era). Classic harsh noise clashes with raw and heavy industrial-ambiance/drones. Screaming distortions from a warped vortex? Ritualistic harsh-noise? A nihilistic soundtrack to the perverse natures of humankind? One of my favorite tracks on here would be Answering the Dead. First I heard it, the next thing I read what the title was (and it was a perfect match!). Warped and multilayered human-voices, radio-like static tones with heavy wave-like distorted winds. Ever heard of those early recordings with people recorded which is supposed to be ghosts/voices of dead people on the radio?  Or maybe seen the flick with Michael Keaton ´Whitenoise´? The track gets that eerie and scary mood, not a radio-channel I wanna tune into!.

Another interesting piece D.Flower works with a ritualistic beating and slightly psychedelic sound-workings. Second last track Cold Steel Table also gets around that Texas Chainsaw-sound via early Atrax Morque in a distorted and reverbed slow-motion. Last track Death Opens No Doors, which is probably the merriest piece on the album. There is nothing beyond the void, only peace and well... nothingness. Noise-Churning beast of sound crawling in and out of your soul. Very nice".

A thorough death-industrial album with a lot of grinds, ambient-fuzz and less rhythmic monotony which some death-industrial artists sometimes works with. Fans of harsh-noise who needs an introduction into death-industrial... could work!. Despite all the death and misery which the album deals with, I would nonetheless recommend this album! And yes, the guy behind this project is a true gentleman who gives hugs over messenger! I love him. He couldn't provide me with a promo from the label, and so he just made one himself which he sent me instead!... Love him!. Well?... Ain´t Love Grand?!...

Sutcliffe Jugend (1982-2019)

R.I.P

By Robert Kristian Carter

Sutcliffe Jugend the legendary practitioners of extreme electronic music have ceased operations. Formed by Kevin Tomkins in 1982, SJ was one of the major innovators in the then-burgeoning Power Electronics movement. Kevin was joined by Paul Taylor in the early '80s and the pair went on to create some of the most brutal recordings of the Power Electronics genre including " When Pornography Is No Longer Enough " and " Victim As Beauty ". After a lengthy hiatus in the late nineties. Sutcliffe Jugend returned with the caustically abrasive album " This Is The Truth ". They also played their first public live concerts to promote the album.

Numerous albums followed over the subsequent years. Each one expanding their sound and aesthetics far beyond their initial forays in the Power Electronics underground. Tours of the Far East and concerts all over the world cemented their reputation as one of the most intense live acts on the extreme music underground.

In a short statement, Kevin Tomkins stated that: " I have said everything I need to say with Sutcliffe Jugend. We have never played to the gallery and we see no point in continuing just for the sake of it. With SJ we always agreed that it had to be all or nothing. Therefore Sutcliffe Jugend has run its course. Thank you to everybody for their support and friendship. It has been a blast."

Skullflower. Some thoughts.

written by Kristian Robert Carter

This is going to hopefully be my final post on the whole Skullflower episode after I and a few other friends were pulled into its orbit.

I personally think that the dropping of Bowers project Skullflower was the result of what can only be seen as the continuing gentrification of the capital and it's rapidly shrinking music venues. There are very few venues left as many have closed down. The remaining venues are the domain of a small number of promoters and license holders.

With the current climate of 'moral and political' safety, diversity and safe spaces any art or music that has difficult and troubling themes, art or aesthetics are increasingly finding itself subject to a hysterical moral McCarthyism. If you are unwilling, unable or unknowingly able to put whatever art form you use for self-expression into some kind of context; you will be seen as potentially problematic and a threat to the new era of ' tolerance at any price '.

It will not matter if you are guilty of any indiscretion you will be judged on how you are perceived by the moral arbiters of decency. There is also a massive culture of morality point scoring if you are seen to be acting in the will of the common good and the vast majority of individuals who want to sleepwalk through life shepherded like sheep by those who know better.

Skullflower had to go. Not because of any Nazism or white power reality but because members of the audience and the Twitterati 'felt uncomfortable' by aspects of their aesthetics. Bower refused to contextualize his art or provide reasons as to why he uses certain images and symbols.

There was no smoking gun of proof, the so-called evidence was spurious and lacked any credibility.

The refusal to play the game and provide a sheep-like an audience with the information they desired so as to not feel threatened was the key factor in all this.

I imagine The Quietus and Raw Power were expecting a capitulation to this hysterical mob along the lines of Mark Solotroff or William Bennett, both of whom were forced to issue statements in defence of their art in order to appease the mob baying for their blood.

Bower remained silent. Bower had to go.

There is still no irrefutable proof that Skullflower is a white power band. There is simply half-truths and trawling through years of internet posts trying to find that silver bullet.

The Quietus is expanding its witch hunt and by all accounts seems to be labouring under the apprehension that they are the new cultural guardians. They will decide who and what should be acceptable in this hyper-liberal age of enforced conformity to the new artistic morality.

What the Quietus and others don't realise is that they are the mirror image of the hard conservative censorship lobby that was so prevalent in the final two decades of the last century. That this morality police approach the censorship of art from the Liberal left does not make them any different from the censorship of Mary Whitehouse or Tipper Gore.

To compound matters, certain individuals and groups have moved in unison during this Skullflower censorship bloodletting. Various people with personal scores to settle have been given an opportunity to settle scores, mischief makes and causes problems to those they regard as foes.

The so-called anti-Nazi triumvirate of Blake, Home and Ayers have obviously used this explosion of public wrath to steer trouble onto those they have personal vendettas against. This cabal has attempted to cast the net thrown over Skullflower to ensnare and bring down others. The ludicrous Who Makes The Nazis witch-hunting mob are also involved in trying to gain as much momentum against those they have targeted before whilst the Skullflower backlash Applecart is rolling.

These attacks have not just been the domain of the Liberal Left but a swathe of so-called Right Wingers have also used the above to get involved and sow some discord against their foes they share in common with the Liberal left.

To make things even more convoluted many opportunists have jumped on the bandwagon and tried to embroil people in the mess in order to settle scores, not at all linked to the whole Quietus/Skullflower issue.

This is especially true of myself who was drawn into it all not because of Skullflower but for other reasons such as I once had a dalliance with a woman they liked or I publically criticised their favourite band.

This whole episode will be looked back upon I hope with embarrassment, however, I do also fear that it will embolden those who seek to destroy art forms that they do not understand and believe are dangerous to their political and ideological positions.

Article on Quietus:
