Mind Of God, Di-Noise - MindNoise

A new split release from Peru has hit the street, two artists offering head-splitting electronics and rhythmic leftfield droppings. Mind of God hails from the US (With tracks mastred by John Stillings of Steel Hook Prostheses), and Di-Noise hails from Peru and each is doing their cool thing for this release.  A limited 300 CD release, out on Renacer Records. 8 tracks, about 30 minutes.

First track Impending Revenge Porn Dokument Drop hits it up like an up-tempo Mick Harris/Scorn, a lovely and hypnotic jazzy-cool relentless big city drum. Slightly claustrophobic in sound it is, the kind of rhythms one might hear in a small cellar room (or in the attic!). Additional droid-like but organic sound-samples/drones melts in and out of the ear, perfectly working together with the rhythms. Percussive and machine-like clicks and clocks working there also. Dark and jazzy drum-machine music for rusty robots kind of. Second track Increasing Methodose turns up the cellar-like darkness. A slower thing than the first track, but slightly more menacing. Looped and evocative trip-hop drums with additional industrial percussions and sub-sonic bass-elements, how could anyone imagine that dark-shit could be so catchy?! (and funky!). Sounds of vinyl-scratching, tv-samples, and those rusty and warped droid sounds are also there. The last Mind Of God track called The Supreme Ordeal also being the most industrial-like of all the Mind of God tracks. A punishing beat of slow hammer´ish beats, basically falling on top of your head (rhythmically) and maybe just like when a droid starts punching your stomach in! A lovely experimental piece with excellent drum-machine programming with eerie distorted voices (And samples!). A good start for this split!. The gif-picture below perfectly illustrates these 3 GREAT tracks!

Di-noise first track When Machine Wake Up continues the split perfectly. The jazzy and rusty basement feel has been replaced by a smooth and high-tech glitch-sound in some hip Bladerunner bar. It starts with high above dark-sound, and then it just slowly descends your physical presence into the futuristic city below. Droids and people are walking on the streets, computerized traffic, flying drones with coca-cola commercials on their huge screens, etc etc. Cool sounds and rhythms and plenty of that cyberpunk mood. Next track Find Me has a minor synth/retro-wave element in it, the nicely organized (and slightly random) rhythms adds extra coolness to the track. The third Di-noise track Insert Coin works more in a kind of 8-bit music meets electronica. That nostalgic feel of standing inside the arcade and being surrounded by hundreds of arcade-machines, while having people hammering their fingers rhythmically on the buttons. Next offering called Virus, a short noisy messed up mutant dub-step treat almost impossible to dance to (but sounds good nonetheless). The very last track Anxiety, being a slightly stressed-out droid on bad droid-juice. It starts and then it breaks down, end of the split album!.

A release well worth anyone's attention, and with a broad audience as well. There is something for the industrial-dub fans of Scorn, downbeat/trip-hop, dark-ambient, glitch, electronica/IDM, and drone ... You name it!. One of the must check out releases of 2018.

 Recent Cosmic Horror Movies

Review series on Recent Cosmic Horror Movies Cosmic horror, also referred to as Lovecraftian horror, has seen a rise during the last decade or so, especially as small low budget indie flicks which often goes under the radar in the mainstream due to bad distribution, lack of advertisement, and, let’s face it, their underground nature. Though a few of the movies in this series rather a big budget Hollywood movies and hardly indie at all, the majority are pretty unknown to most audiences and very deserving of attention. My aim is thus to spread the word of their existence and to share my impression of them, describe their aesthetics and the moods they convey.

Now, cosmic horror may be a familiar concept to the readers of this blog, but for the uninitiated, I will give a few directions of what I understand as cosmic horror. The genre has its roots in H.P. Lovecraft’s writings and the worldview that they communicate. This entails the notion that the universe is not a friendly and harmonically ordered place; that its harmony is in fact disharmony and that it hides unspeakable horrors if we were to lift the veil and experience its true nature. In this horrific cosmos, mankind is essentially insignificant and when faced with this reality the options are either our demise or descent into madness. Mankind is, in all possible scenarios, displaced in the cosmos we inhabit and essentially doomed. In terms of genre, cosmic horror can take many forms. It can deal with themes of cosmic or biological phenomena, aliens, monsters, scientific experiments, ancient cults, God(s) and demons. The occult has always held a central place in cosmic horror, but simple themes of demonic possession etc. are not cosmic horror unless they ponder more philosophically about mankind’s role within this cosmology and essentially deems it insignificant and bound for a horrific end. This series of reviews contain movies that take up themes such as the pending extinction of mankind, alien abduction, occult rituals, pacts with the devil, medical experiments gone wrong and weird cosmic and biological phenomena. They fall under the genres of sci-fi, occult horror, body horror, and fantasy (or something close to that) but are united by their overarching thematization of mankind’s (dis)placement in cosmos.

The Void (2016)

Now, the first movie that I am going to deal with is the Canadian indie flick The Void from 2016 (aired in theatres in the Spring of 2017) written and directed by Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie. This was the movie that lead me down the path to explore more recent cosmic horror movies and which inspired me to do this piece at Kaltedur., so how can I convey to you just how cool this flick is? Well, imagine if John Carpenter met with David Cronenberg in 1982 and decided to make a movie together. Sounds pretty awesome, right? The majority of the movie is set at a hospital where a group of locals has locked themselves in to escape a mysterious group of hooded people outside who is out to get them. Inside the hospital or protagonist, Deputy Daniel Carter who is played by Canadian actor Aaron Poole faces a series of horrific events of people turning into murderous tentacled monsters that he and his companions must battle.

As the plot unfolds, the story delves deeper into occult territory mixed with medical experimentations and portals to other worlds, but that you will have to experience for yourselves. The Void masterfully blends body horror elements with cosmic and occult concepts, and its locations and effects – all mechanical and without the all too often poorly executed CGI – function really well. The overall aesthetic and mood of the movie is quite dark and twisted and is reminiscent of eighties classics such as The Thing (carpenter) and The Fly (Cronenberg). The acting is far from sublime, but it is good enough not to ruin any of the cool retro-feel and good, though not overly original, storyline. So the bottom line is if you like the classic horror movies of masters such as John Carpenter and David Cronenberg you should definitely give The Void a go.

Blood Tower - S/T

Yes yes, I know!... Why the heck is I reviewing an older release, with a cassette which has been sold out from the label?! I should have followed up on the various dungeon synth releases back then, or simply just reviewing the bloody cassette when I bought it. But what the heck, it´s still out there on Bandcamp and the cassette can be located in some murky dungeon cellar. Good and cult-like releases are a good reason to review them, not just saying ´Nahh, we only review new stuff´... Fxxx that, I am doing this review cause I feel like it. So let´s go!.

The self-titled release from 2016, is the very first/debut from this Nebraska, Omaha-based dungeon-synth. We´re not dealing with dragons and knights here, but more about murky things hiding in the shadows. Ever read horror comics like Eerie or Creepy?. Especially those with a witch-burning and medieval-gothic setting. Kind of places where ghouls are sniffing out their next meal at the local cemetery, where hags are gathering for a black mass... To boil it down to one soup, a place where dark folk-lore would keep people inside their houses at night!. The first tracks let you sit alone inside a morgue, with a thing... No doubt about it that the sheet covering the thing is moving!... Slow and slithering sounds crawls closer and closer. It reminds me of MR James´s classic ghost tale ´Whistle and I´ll Come For You My Lad!´, listen to this track while reading the last page of the story and you´ll know what I mean. A slow, haunting, creepy and monotonous ghost tune with additional white-noise in the background. Or see the movie (Below!) Excellent horror flick!

Next track Nocturnal Mountain has that epic proto-martial Conan-meets-the-occult feel to it, sounds like a minimal version early Endvra. The sounds and the tunes do it nicely, so why add more to it? Third track Returning to the Kingdom of Ashes, a desolate and bleak majestic atmospheric piece of shock. Seeing a once loved and thriving city/kingdom which has been burned down to a crisp. Forth track Foul Black Poisons, being inside some secret room where poisons are being brewed. By witches, assassins, evil henchmen? A nicely depressive and sinking doom´ish piece. The mood gets a little lighter with the next track called Alkoholik (yes with a K!), even jolly. Although the "merry" tune gives the listener the feeling that whoever is consuming the alkoholik, might need a break. A clumsy (but charming) example of drunken man's dungeon synth! Love Song of a Weeping Ghoul returns to that slightly epic and gothic-horror setting, perfect for watching the black+white silent version of Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Seventh track Beautiful Witches snares you with a spell of mystical and ritualistic tunes of seduction. And the very last track Taverns of the Phantasmal Stout gives the listener a break with a "normal" stout-beer.

WHAT IS NOT THERE TO LIKE?!. Blood Tower prooves the less-is-more effect being a good thing, and that minimalism can create a specific atmospheric/theme of focus. In this case, the black-white horror flicks and moldy gothic-horror vintage comics. I love it, and I am sure that you will love it as well!.

The Knights Of Gob - S/T

Apparently Grol the Goblin isn´t the only loose goblin in town spreading mischief and mayhem. The Knights of Gob being one of the latest in so-called snot-faced goblin-synth. Some like it, while some don´t. Well... Whoever said that Mortiis was the only goblin? He looks more like a goblin/elf hybrid, or maybe one of the hag-like creatures from Ridley Scott´s splendid fantasy flick Legend. Well, one thing is for sure... The Knights of Gob being all about defending their kind from golden haired knights and would-be heroes!. Well, let us take a closer look at what this is all about!

While Grol the Goblin being closer to traditional dungeon synth, Knights of Gob works around various styles and sounds. Grim and ugly primal eerie stuff on Sir Jerf and the Dragon, brilliant use of keyboards and sounds here!  You´ll encounter the electro-punk retro-sound in Too Many Potions... if you had too many Hobgoblin beers to this one it might end up sounding like Depeche Mode´s ´Photographic´from their first album Speak and Spell. VERY naive material here, BUT with LOTS OF BALLS! The Harp of The Green lady brings along a beautiful melancholic piece, and yes!... It is in fact quite beautiful and catchy. The Quest of The Shinies being some sort of goblin-crash into melodic synth-wave, a fast and hectic dramatic ride on a Goblins favorite stead (Boar?).

The ride on boars ends abruptly with the menacing and scary The Worf Riders, reviving classic John Carpenter atmospheres here! After the encounter with the Worf Riders (could it be bloodthirsty orcs?), we meet the sadness and tears with the dear goblins... with the haunting melodies of The Tomb Of A Thousand Goblins (Really nice!). The War Of Gnomish Aggression... Need to say more?. Doom´ish thumpings, evocative flute-tune, angry tribal beatings, sinister organ, martial aggression yes. Really really good!. Next track I Dub Thee... REALLY pumps in all the right ingredients for a good and melodic synth-wave/retro-wave track. Last track is just, good (JUST HEAR IT OK?!)

And that is just that!. Everything here is working and everything is good. The sounds and cool, melodies are cool, the atmosphere is cool. End of story!

James Parrot - Drone 69

Mr. Parrot is at IT again with Drone 69, released just 3 days ago. If you don´t know who James Parrot is (or read my former review), I can reveal to you that he is a godsend for pure drone-junkies. Because that is what he does, drone-based ambient music... and that is what you get will ALL of his releases, simple and beautiful drone-based ambient music with no side-effects or subliminal messages. Purely based on levitating the listener into various states of mind through sound.

All the tracks are simply been called I, II, III etc but all have been mixed beautifully together. We are not dealing with actual sound recordings, but we are dealing with ...(I think)... multilayered string-like and stretched angelic synths on loop and reverbed effects with gentle distortions. It literally sounds just like one of those good dreams you wake up from, and you feel absolutely wonderful. That floating-over-everything sensation being a strong ingredient with Drone 69, and I am not talking about that sexual position... If you do take a look at the cover art for one second while listening to the recorded material, it does actually makes sense.

In the springtime in Denmark, several farmers grow Raps (Brassica Napus) when the flower of the plant has bloomed the whole field is a sensorial explosion. The huge field being EXTREMELY yellow, and the smell can almost be described as a HUGE honey wave fragrance just engulfing you. And with the wind machines in the background of the actual cover-art, it could actually be in Denmark. So yes, a spring-time sensual drone experience?... I wanna have this waking me up in the morning, just slowly.

Need to stress out (or wake up slowly in the morning)? Or just missing that spring-time sensation of bloom and gently warmth, you can find it all here! (see Bandcamp link below)

Cyber City Oedo 808

Continuing my anime revisiting and still on the cyberpunk genre, Cyber City Oedo 808 was probably the first of the kind I layed my eyes on (along with Venus Wars, which I´ll review soon).

Dated from 1990, and from the mind of Yoshiaki Kawajiri, also responsible for another classic, Ninja Scroll, CCO is a work of art.
It circles around 3 characters who are cyber criminals and have been given a chance to redeem and maybe gain freedom by joining the cyber police.

It´s only 3 episodes and each focus on one of the 3 characters. Each episode is meticulously detailed, artwork wise. I can´t say it enough, old anime was the best. The work that has been put into this, without computer graphics, CGI, everything handmade. Absolutely amazing.

There´s only one thing wrong with it: it´s only 3 episodes. I searched online to check if there were more but only 3 were ever made and it´s such a shame. I always thought that CCO would make for a great series and that way gain a cult status and come out of the shadow of obscurity.

In conclusion, you should get a hold of this asap. Thrilling, epic, action-packed and brilliant!

Necromishka - The Space Between Us

Necromishka is a new act which hails from Israel, members being Tamar Singer (Cruel Wonder, Zeresh) and Michael Zolotov (Kadaver). Two different backgrounds join forces, one from a neo-folk act and one from a death-industrial/power-electronics act! And this is one is their debut, released on a new label called 999 Cuts. A CDr housed in a cardboard slipcase, in my case, it was a Nescafe cardboard slipcase. Promising... I like coffee drinkers.

The first track starts off with primitive angelic post-rock´ish soundscapes, with a slowed down voice recording... so slow that you cannot hear what he/she is singing/saying. The soundscapes being quite good and interesting, despite the primitive sound-quality. Actually, the primitive recording heightens the track. Next track called Paradise (access denied) jolts the listener into a melancholic sludge. Mysterious and ominous multi-layered soundscapes put the neo-psychedelic mood just right, reverbed acoustic folk´ish guitar-work and occasional ritualistic vocals. Meditative and melancholic good stuff. Next track Blood Room sucks the listener into a reverbed noise-ambient treat with angelic guitars and threatening vocals in the background (almost like a spiraling vortex), endlessly chaotic and static at the same time.

Fourth track Excelsior adds extra juice to the continued and heightening esoteric-sense, almost works as a follow-up to the former track Blood Room. Cool sounding witchlike humming vocals, strange psychedelic, and swirling soundscapes with suddenly ends at starts of with the next track called Them Roots. So far this album kind of sounds like a live recording in a basement. Them Roots being a disturbing 2-minutes intermission. Next track Evil follows up on the psychedelic garage neo-folk sound, almost with a proto hippie-folk/early 60s vibe to it (In a good way!). Evocative guitar work and interesting vocals, really love the effects on the vocals. The second last track Harms Way offers screaming voices of the dead, reverbed rumblings and angelic post-rock´ish textures. Last Track simply called There Is No Space Between Us ends the album in beautiful acoustic ambient style!

A decent album... A really really decent album. I thought it would be a terrible treat by the look of the cover-art... my advice; don´t look at the cover-art just listen to the music! Like I mentioned earlier, it does sound like a live-recording BUT! It works perfectly in its improvised state of mind. Fans of Novy Svét and Swans, do give this one a check up!

Bitter Old Wizard - Southern Grim

New evidence that original and true dungeon synth still being very much alive and kicking! The latest(and upcoming!) album by Bitter Old Wizard from Alabama is no exception. Bitter Old Wizard being a fairly new dungeon synth act with various self-released digital albums (and singles) on his Bandcamp site, all of the released in 2018. And the upcoming Southern Grim might just be the best dish on his smörgasbord.

The murky title Southern Grim, and the cover-art clearly showing a hooded figure surrounded by a dense growth of trees demonstrating a sharp blade... might just frighten off new-comers to dungeon synth! But, there is really nothing to be afraid of (or is there?...).Regardless, Bitter Old Wizard being a perfect introduction to atmospheric dungeon synth for melodic ambient fans. We are not dealing with a typical dungeon synth act, but more like those mysterious/esoteric kinds in the same league as Erding or even like early esoteric ambient pioneers Ain Soph. Being ritualistic, with live pianos, primitive, trance-like improvisation, slightly gothic-horror´ish (Lovecraftian??, Poe´ish??). But at the same time being very digestible and universal in sound, clearly what one would define as classic horror music from an age sadly gone bye. If we were to connect this music to a medieval dungeon´ish setting, we would probably be at the mercy of a demon-worshipping heretic of a wizard. Still in doubt? Check out the satanic scenes with Baron Simon de Belleme from the old Robin of Sherwood series, and you will know what I mean! Or just look at this photo below while listening.

All the tracks are good and all the sounds are good. The atmosphere is perfectly dark and moody. The production being crystal clear, but not too smooth on the edges... We are still in the primitive and almost 8-bit kind of sound aesthetic dungeon here. The first track Bitter Old Potion gives the listener that ritualistic feeling of evil plotting in absolute secrecy. Creepy horror synths, dripping water in the deep cavern-sounds, ghostly winds howling (Winds in a cavern?..nahh... But who cares? It bloody works!) equals horror perfection! Second track My Discomfort Grows almost exploits the gothic ghost story, try reading M.R James to this and I will guarantee a stimulated and scary read. A simple piano tale without lyrics, very dark and very discomforting. Third offering Welcome To the Southern Grim adds a nifty dose of epicness to the album, martial drummings could have been added here... but, the track is still good (so no need for that).

Innocence Through Suffering being an intriguing track with multiple personalities within. Starts pretty innocent sounding, melancholic and soft sounding ambient-synth tunes ( a bit like Old Cabin ), it then later evolves back into that 8-bit black-dungeon-without-hope feel. It ends with a crystal clear glitch scream, heightening the esoteric feel. The fifth track reminds you of the Satanic undercurrents which run thickly and subtle on this album. The Morning Star, which of course has the Lucifer hint (look it up on Wikipedia!). A beautiful piano piece once again. The sixth track ends you up bound and waist-down in a cauldron, evil witches looking you over and waiting for their treat. There is absolutely nothing you can do, so you might as well wait for death to deliver you from the boiling pain.

The last tracks give you that returning soldiers in defeat kind of mood, there is really nothing to be glad about. After being tormented by satanic wizards and their potions to innocent sacrificial lambs and to end up with heretic witches in your company....... Damn!

A great blackened dungeon synth album, and a great gothic horror-synth album as well. 2 GREAT surprises in one!. Let us have this out on cassette please! Go and check it out while watching a good Hammer Horror movie!.

Urotsudidõji

Urotsukidōji is a 1989 anime based on a series of erotic manga. The anime, however, is far more violent and gory.

Every 3,000 years the human world is united with the demon world and the man-beast world by the revival of the Super God (Chōjin), known as the Overfiend in the English version. The saga follows Jyaku Amano—a man-beast—and his quest to find the real Chōjin and to ensure the safe future of all three worlds. However, he finds his beliefs put to the test when he encounters numerous demons, who plan to destroy the Chōjin and prevent the three worlds from joining.

It features lots of tentacle rape porn and exploding girls. Limbs being torn apart, more exploding girls and shiny giant cocks.
However, the sex scenes are not that many as you´d imagine so it just makes this a very violent horror anime with dongs in the mixture.

The animation is very nice and the story gets you hooked. It has 5 more sequels, which I never saw because they were never released in Portugal. But I plan to watch them soon, I got curious about how this shitfest will end.

Urotsukidōji was the first ever hentai I ever watched and the best one, without any doubt. It´s considered a cult series and the precursor of tentacle porn, which the Japanese seem to like so much. It´s also a pretty cool horror anime, gory and violent. Worth to check it out if you haven´t done it still.

Blackhouse - Ignite Blackhouse Youth

The latest sacrificial offering from our favorite Christian peaching industrial outfit. If you need a proper introduction to this classic band, I suggest you check out the former interview I did via the webzine Brvtalist (See link below) or check out the review I did of a recent live-recording from Leipzig (See also the link below).

So this one is the latest Blackhouse, released on No Blanc Emb on a clear and beautiful vinyl. So how does Blackhouse sound nowadays?. Brian Ladd is still doing the job just right, delivering mind-bending and brutal caveman industrialism with an ear (or two) for genre-fusions and experimental avant-garde touches here and there. Take the third Track called BHbmBS, percussive and looped rhythmic industrial electronics smash into proto stoner-rock/doom-metal guitar. Einsturzende Neubauten meets Black Sabbath anyone?. A track like Heaven´s Devils continues with acid-drenched guitar-work with those relentless rhythms.

Ignite Blackhouse Youth even introduces rap/hip-hop vocals delivered by a Craig G, evil and warped sounding synths with acid-drenched Helios Creed´ish guitars working in the background. Track 8 Israel being a hypnotizing and minimal atmospheric piece, delivering ear-stimulating closed hi-hats and a deep bass drum, a trippy dup and jazzy clarinet sound,  tortured distorted metallic clusters of shattered sounds. The Blame Game sounds like Ministry at their greatest on LSD! And the very last track All Around Us... A VERY atmospheric avant-garde piece... smells like John Cage or early Residents?

I really don't know what to say. It´s a BRILLIANT album, a mad hatter nut-job of an album yes BUT... 100% thoroughly enjoyable from the beginning to the end. It has the aggression, experimentalism, atmosphere, variability and the blessed curiosity to go where none has gone before. You don´t have to be a Christian to enjoy this or a Satanist for that matter. It just WORKS, and that is all that matters. Brilliant!

Wicked City

Cool anime from 1987. Sweet animation but the story falls a bit dull.

Kinda hentaish horror, it tells the story of Renzaburō Taki, who is a Black Guard, a group of people who are responsible for maintaining peace among human and demon world. Taki is assigned to protect Giuseppi Mayart, a two-hundred-year-old Italian mystic who is a signatory for a ratified treaty between the Human World and the Black World in Tokyo, and a major target for the Radicals. Taki is also informed that he will be working with a partner, a Black Guard from the Black World, the very beautiful Makie.

The whole plot is basically Taki fighting off a couple of demon radicals in order to save Makie, whom in the meantime fell in love with and to protect Giuseppi.

As I said, the animation is awesome, I´m a sucker for old school anime. It has a few steamy
(ie bewwwwwbs) but it doesn´t get half as porny as Legend of the Overfiend. It doesn´t get as terrifying either and that´s what´s wrong with it.

As a one part movie, it fails a bit but originally, this was the first of a six-volume story so I was hoping there would be a sequel or something, it would definitely work much better.

Transvirtuel Tidal Being 0003 - Pure

Another REAL and INTERESTING treat from Black Ring Ritual Records. A new act from Italy described simply as harsh noise. The thing is... it isn't really harsh noise, but something far more than that! This album entitled as Pure being the project´s debut, released the 11th of June 2018 and the real-time dubbed cassette ltd. to 25 copies.

I really don't know how to describe this. Aggressive glitch-core, cybernetic electronica-noise, mercury machinery?. You tell me, one thing is for certain... It´s hard to put inside a nutshell!. The first track sounds like being on LSD while being converted into a Cyberman (Watch Dr Who). Computerised alarm-like beeping sounds, looped machinelike human-voices, cold assembly-line machinery elements and distorted screams which sounds like lost souls trapped into some cybernetic nightmare. Second track sounds like a nuclear factory experiencing a bloody meltdown. Layered sounds of burning-hot mercury-like water boiling beyond extinction while the sound of another alarm is going in the background. Sounds like an upcoming blast!

Third track sounds like signals being transmitted through cyberspace. Pulse and steel-like laser blasts of informational-shockwaves being constantly uploaded through someone's neural system, and it doesn't sound nice with the warped screaming in the background. Fourth track has the sound of a matrix printer (I Think) being on top of ethereal-like noise-electronics. Almost a hypnotic ambient quality here! The last track ends like the lost soundtrack from a classic Star Trek episode, fans of Boards of Canada might even enjoy this magical piece.

REALLY a fantastic and a UNIQUE release which could please fans of NON (Easy Listening For the Hard...) to Esplendor Geometrico (EG1) to Coil (Worship the Glitch). Not that you could compare it with those (just a little). A pure and delightful cybernetic pain and pleasurable experience that you have to check out!.
